I have a notes app on my phone where I write down the funny, random, and profound things my kids say. They’re now 10 and almost 13 so I’ve been at it for a bit.
The other day I scrolled through some of them and they brought me deep joy. Thought I would share a few with you today! Because, well…we could all use a bit more joy, right?
“Mom, let's come up with words that rhyme with duck.” (4 years old)
“If you eat the lucky charms marshmallow, something MAGICAL happens!” (4 years old)
Mom: "Tomorrow Advent begins. It's the time when we get ready for Jesus to be born."
Her: "But Jesus was born last year. He's big now." (4 years old)
“I don’t want to die because I love you. I don’t want to have a birthday because after lots of birthdays, I’ll die.” (4 years old)
“Is there an oven here at Dairy Queen? I need to warm up this ice cream.” (4 years old)
“Mom, can you explain to Wesley what moving is? He thinks he only needs 7 shirts and 7 pants and we’ll be back in 3 months.” (5 years old)
“Mom, let’s make Isabella lunch even though she’s mad and didn’t help with the dishwasher.” (5 years old)
“Adults can only lie three times in three years and you just told your second lie.” (6 years old)
“Mom, you’re so comfy. You feel like a blanket.” (6 years old)
“As I get ready to turn 8, I’d like to shape into something else. I’ve been mostly funny and silly so far. Now I’d like to be more serious. Like reflect on my feelings and emotions.” (7 years old)
“Mom, can I just kind of push things aside in my room? Because I actually had a lot of other plans today besides cleaning.” (7 years old)
“I don’t want to be a teenager like the other kids. And since I won’t get a phone until I’m 16, maybe that’s better. It feels like people change when they get screens all the time.” (9 years old)
“Mom, are your ears open now?” (9 years old)
“I don’t know how adults aren’t sad all the time that they’re not kids anymore.” (9 years old)
“Jeremy is still here, just not in contact. Like the nether in Minecraft. He goes through a portal and goes to a new world. In 1000 years, Jeremy could come back to earth because he’ll beat the underworld.” (9 years old)
”I think I’ll do choir. I usually worry about something a ton and then I say yes anyways. So I think I’ll just skip the worry part and just do it.” (10 years old)
“I think parents should get paid. It’s hard work. I’m going to be really annoying so you’ll get more money.” (10 years old)
“Mom, can you watch my dance I made up and tell me if it’s dumb? Be honest.” (10 years old)
“I hate Advent because it’s about waiting and I have ADHD.” (10 years old)
“I want to be a climatologist when I grow up because it feels like the world is ending. Wesley says we only have two millennia left!” (11 years old)
“Mom, the girls just play on their phone! I want to go on a journey around the playground.” (11 years old)
“Mom, you should make a book of all of your sermons so people can read them and they don’t have to go to church.” (11 years old)
There were fireworks in a parking lot on a 4th of July: “I feel like someone should be supervising this.” (11 years old)
What a wonderful array of your children's quotes. Some made me smile and chuckle! Others struck me as quite intuitive and deep!
Thank you, Jenny, for sharing these funny and heartwarming peeks at childhood. How I miss those priceless tidbits from my children's early days.
