this is my prayer before
checking the newsthe desire to ignore
and self-protect
runs deep“it’s hurts too much”
my nervous system
whispersyes — it is too much
which is exactly why
once or twice a day
i will read these headlines
and allow them to
break my heart a littlenot because i love pain
but because i love humans
morethose little heartbreaks
keep me awake and awarethey invite me to write
name and expressthey inspire sign making
and calls to leadersthey motivate me to
support writers and press
who refuse to breakthey cause me to check in
on the latest group of humans
being targeted because
power fears their existencethey remind me to
lean against a tree
and breatheso yes —
i will read a few stories today
as i practice staying alive
during the horrendously
jarring trainwreck of
late stage capitalismlove will win in the end
but it’s not going to be pretty

The Thread
The Thread is a weekly-ish newsletter where we untangle the stories that make us who we are so we can show up to our lives with spacious presence, brave honesty, radical love & wild curiosity.

Thank you for these wise words, Jenny, when every day feels like an assault on the emotions, and every value I hold dear is denigrated. I am reminded of my privilege, when so many are being stripped of their rights and humanity. It is unconscionable. As an American, I am insulted. And angry. And taking small actionable steps like calling my representatives and showing up at protests to add my voice to the millions who are raising theirs against this horrific administration.
